Abstract: This article shows you how to repair an inoperative speedometer with fault code VAG 16885 (P0501).
Applies to: Volkswagen Jetta, Golf, GTI 1999 - 2006 (platform: A4)

Symptom
Speedometer was inoperative and Check Engine light was on. Confirmed no speedometer signal with VW scan tool.
Cause
Found wires at speedometer sensor broken from heat damage. Harness has heat shield (heat resistant hood) which was dislodged.
Repair
VW parts did not have the repair parts in stock. Discovered that the connector for AC pressure sensor is the same connector. Replaced connector at speedo sensor with used component from salvage yard.
