BMW ATF Service for A4S 310R and A5S 310Z automatic transmissions

Abstract: Revised ATF service (drain and fill capacity)  for the A4S 310R and the A5S 310Z automatic transmisisons, reference page 240-14 through 240-16. See Document 5 at bottom of page.

Specifications for automatic transmission fluid capacities disagree within factory service information website (www.bmwtechinfo.com), as documented below.

_Applies to: BMW 5 Series 1991 - 1995 - 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder models (platform: E34)

A4S 310R (4 speed) used on 1991 - 1995 525i
A5S 310Z (5 speed) used on 1994 - 1995 530i_

Recommended service procedure

A good way to be sure the correct amount of fluid is refilled is to measure the amount of fluid that was initially drained out. Of course this assumes the correct amount of fluid was in the transmission prior to draining.

When refilling, pump in the same amount of fluid that was initially drained out (or as much as it will take with the engine off). Then follow the procedure in the manual for checking the ATF level (run engine until ATF temp reaches 30- 50 degress C, add fluid until is spills from fill hole). Recheck fluid level after driving car and shifting through all gears.

Note

Use only transmission fluid approved for use by BMW. All other fluids will cause non-warrantable transmission damage.
Mixing different types of transmission fluids will lead to transmission failure.

Below is the factory technical data sheet for the A4S 310R (Document 1). Directly following this sheet is the revised capacity as found in an attachment to BMW service bulletin published in September 2001 (SI B 24 01 98) (Document 2). Note the discrepency in Oil change volume. The same is shown for the A5S 310Z transmission (Document 3 and Document 4).

Note

Compare oil change volume in each factory document.
