Center console, removing and installing
1. Move seats as far forward as possible and fold backrests forward.
- Working behind seat, remove center console retaining screws (arrow). Left side shown, right is similar.
- Move seats back.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable and cover terminal with insulating material.
CAUTION
Prior to disconnecting the battery, read the battery cautions in 001 General Warnings and Cautions.
3. Remove radio. See 650 Radio.
CAUTION
Before disconnecting radio be sure to obtain radio anti-theft code.
4. Remove rubber boot around parking brake lever by prying it up and out of center console.
If applicable: Pull small trim piece in front of and below parking brake lever backwards about 5 mm (ÂĽ in), then lift to remove.
5. Working in left and right footwell:
- Lever off plastic screw covers (A) and remove center console front retaining screws.
- Remove two screws (B) holding center console to upper dashboard.
6. Working at center dashboard:
- Remove cover plate mounting screws (outer arrows).
- Unclip heater controls and slide inwards.
- Working behind cover plate, unplug switches and gauges.
7. Remove shifter handle. See 250 Gearshift Linkage.
8. Using a plastic prying tool, remove shifter bezel and boot.
9. Remove ash tray. Under ash tray, remove ash tray housing mounting screw.
10. Remove storage box.
11. Remove cup holder assembly by depressing retaining clips.
12. Front console and center dashboard components:
1.Center dashboard cover plate
2.Lighter assembly
3. Cover bezels
4. Shifter panel
5. Automatic shifter bezel
6. Window switch
1996 Roadster center dashboard illustrated. Other models are similar.
14. Raise rear of center console slightly, while pulling toward rear of vehicle. Pull console back until front locking clips disengage. While lifting console out, disconnect electrical connector for cigarette lighter and clock / onboard computer, if necessary. Carefully remove console from vehicle, checking for wiring, cables or mechanical parts that might get snagged during removal.
15. Installation is reverse of removal.
